Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be homeless, hungry, addicted or desperately poor? How often do you see a friend in distress or crisis, but feel helpless to really make a difference? Whether it’s encouraging a jobless friend, lifting the spirits of someone trapped in depression, leaving an anonymous gift for a grieving mother, hosting a starting-over shower for a divorced friend, or playing one small part in long-term support for a family in deep crisis, daily opportunities to make a difference in hurting lives are limitless for a Hope lifter.
Sometimes we go through what we go through, to help others go through what we went through. Man can count on no one but himself; he is alone, abandoned on earth in the midst of his infinite responsibilities, without help, with no other aim than the one he sets himself, with no other destiny than the one he forges for himself on this earth. There is no greater state of hopelessness than of man without God, because God is the source of life. Life without God is hopeless. But life with God is an endless hope. God knows our troubles, but He wants us to come to Him and ask for His help and relief. He wants us to recognize the true source of help and our only real hope.
The only hope that has substance is found in the word of God. The word of God does not promise a charmed life filled with constant blessings, but it gives solid assurance that life is worth living, that problems are worth enduring, that the risks of life are worth taking. The word of God provides hope that there is more to life than what we can see—the invisible world is even more real than the world we see. Even the sun will eventually fade away, but spiritual realities will not. Knowing how God has worked with people in the past and His promises for the future can help us grow to trust and rely on Him.
Hope can be a powerful force. Maybe there’s no actual magic in it, but when you know what you hope for most and hold it like a light within you, you can make things happen, almost like magic because what’s worse than knowing you want something, besides knowing you can never have it? The sky is always beautiful. Even when it’s dark or rainy or cloudy, it’s still beautiful to look at. It’s my favourite thing because I know if I ever get lost or lonely or scared, I just have to look up and it’ll be there no matter what…and I know it’ll always be beautiful. When things go wrong, don’t go with them.
To develop emotional and erotic intelligence we need to practice enlarging our inner passion at every moment. It doesn’t matter what’s going on in our world, or even how we feel about ourselves in the moment. In fact, the best time to accomplishing something may be when we least feel like trying, because the hopeless part of ourselves most needs the light. Always remember that even in the grave, all is not lost so don’t worry. Cast your anxieties upon the Lord!
