Being Grateful in Good Times and in Bad

Thanksgiving is acknowledging the God behind your blessing, the God behind any good thing in your life (gift of life, joy, peace). To acknowledge means to admit, to recognize, to accept, to reply – to reply God that He is behind the blessings in your life, e.g you can talk, your legs and hands can move, God is behind it. It doesn’t matter whether your blessings are small or big, God is behind it.

How can you be thankful when your doctor says it’s cancer? How can you feel grateful when the one you love just walked out of your life? Or when you’ve been fired . . . or your dream has collapsed . . . or an economic tsunami has wiped out all you’ve worked for? Sometimes the words come from our heart, a true expression of profound gratitude. Sometimes it’s simply the right response, even if it doesn’t feel true. Honestly, I think most of us have had times when we felt like we had nothing to be thankful for. We know that’s not right, but it’s the reality. When we are in the midst of trials, God is fine tuning us to be stronger and bolder for Him. Giving thanks in all of our circumstances tells the world that our God is greater and stronger than anything it has to offer. Thanksgiving is recounting the past acts of God. There are times we need to look back in order not to forget the benefit of the LORD by going down memory lane and one of the reasons man doesn’t have gratitude in his heart is because man’s focus is on material things.

Giving thanks to God is easy when life is going great and everything seems to fall into place. Why is it so hard to give thanks when we are down? Instead of turning our focus during a crisis to God, we instead turn our focus on ourselves and how the world says we should react. When you think of mainstream media, the acceptable reactions to problems vary but are typically negative. When faced with a difficult situation, the world media trains us to believe our situation is hopeless and we should react out of a sense of fear. You might not be where you want to be but you are not where you used to be. You might not have what you desire but God has not given you what you deserve. No matter how we feel, no matter how dark things seem, there is always something to be thankful for. It is also giving thanks to God for many blessings which should not be limited to only good times but also bad times thereby giving us the opportunity to demonstrate our faith in God.  We need to remember always that gratitude happens in quiet pauses and moments, not when you have a giant to-do list and you’re racing around. Thanksgiving brings perfection and perfection brings completeness. Anything you see in your life today is just the beginning, God has the ability to bring it to perfection. If you see any sign of the goodness of God in your life, begin to rejoice because it can only be better.
